Una presentación interactiva - "Los cuyes están de moda"

Materiales y recursos auténticos

  • Workshop Presentation: This is a pdf of a PowerPoint presentation for teachers, with resources and materials embedded: "The Cuy Festival in Peru is a fascinating celebration of a valued animal in this region of the Spanish-speaking world. In this festival, guinea pigs are dressed to the nines and displayed in fashion shows for all to see and admire. The best ones win prizes - and others are eaten. In this thematic unit, students reinforce novice-level vocabulary around themes like clothing, food, and animals through interpretive reading and viewing activities using authentic resources. Through the products and practices relating to the cuy, students explore the tension between animals as a food source and as a source of entertainment. They also debate a variety of cultural perspectives relating to humans' interactions with our pets and animals in general."
  • Sample Unit Plan: "Nuestros adornos" - How we choose to show up in the world is often expressed by the clothing we wear. In this unit, students will interpret authentic resources relating to clothing and other adornments. They will exchange information about the clothes they wear, express preferences about the ways we choose to adorn our bodies, and describe clothing that others are wearing. They will identify cultural products and practices relating to the Festival del Cuy in Peru and compare ways in which the cuy is dressed for competition and the ways we dress our own pets.
  • Sample Lesson Plan: "Las mascotas y la moda," a sample lesson plan in which students pack their suitcases for a fantasy trip to Peru, describe clothing, view an authentic video about the Festival del cuy, and dress their own cuy for entry into a competition; designed with the New York State lesson plan template.
  • Exit/Entrance ticket: Ask students to circle the clothing they are wearing and then tell the teacher or a classmate on the way out of class. For homework, students can color in the clothing and compare their clothing and colors on the following day of class.
  • Ropa T-Chart: Students compare their "packed suitcase" with this information gap task and graphic organizer.
  • Baggage Ticket: Staple this "baggage ticket" onto the student's "suitcase." Students choose if they "siempre/A veces/nunca" pack a lot into their suitcase. This can be used as an entrance or exit ticket.
  • Digital Picturebook: "El viaje de la familia Cuy" from Maguaré.gov.co; an illustrated story about a cuy family going on a trip, with downloadable digital file and black-and-white version for coloring.
  • Pinterest Board: "Los cuyes están de moda" - a large collection of photos, advertisements, infographics, memes and other images related to the guinea pig and the Festival del cuy.
  • YouTube Channel: "El Festival del cuy" - videos representing celebrations from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, including fashion shows, gastronomical fairs, "El baile del cuy" and other guinea pig information.
  • EdPuzzle video: "Junín: Los cuyes más "fashion" se lucen con sus trajes en Huancayo" - an EdPuzzle video with embedded questions about the Festival del cuy in Huancayo, Perú.
